Homemade Fun

Games to Make – Then Play – With Your Grandchild
By Donna Smith

Keep little ones entertained on the next rainy day with these simple craft projects. They are fun to make together – and they'll keep kids busy for hours!

Flip the Cup Game

What you need:
Empty yogurt cup
Cardboard paper towel tube
2 paper fasteners
1 shoelace
Stickers, markers, crayons

Here's what you help your child do:
Tie an end of the shoelace to one of the paper fasteners. Measure about 1 inch down on the paper towel tube, and push the paper fastener through the tube. Bend points of fastener to secure. Tie the other end of the shoelace to the second paper fastener. Punch a hole through the bottom of the yogurt container, and bend points of fastener to secure.

What your child can do on his own:
Use stickers, markers or crayons to decorate the container. Be creative!

How to play:
Hold one end of the tube and flip the yogurt cup up and try to catch it on the end of the tube. Challenge your friends!

Juice Lid Match Game

What you need:
Metal lids from frozen juice containers
Scissors
Glue stick
Magnets (available in hobby stores)
Construction paper in different colors

Here's what you help your child do:
Draw and then cut shapes (two of each shape) out of construction paper. Make them big enough to cover most of the lid.

What your child can do on his own:
Using the glue stick, apply the shapes onto the lids. Flip the lid over and glue on a small magnet. Let it dry for about an hour.

How to play:
Using the front of the refrigerator, let your child match up the shapes. Tell him the name of the shape and the color. Change the game up a bit by having him match up the colors instead of shapes.

Hint: Another fun idea is to have your child glue on pictures of objects out of coloring books or even faces of herself, friends and family. Use the magnets to make up stories, or match familiar faces up with the right family!
