Fun Songs to Sing and Play with Babies

Here are some fun games for you to try with your baby, especially suited to the younger baby (under six months old). MIDI files of some songs are included to refresh your memory. These simple games with repetitive actions and words will give you some fun "together" time and also teach baby about her body and the world around her.

When is the best time to play? Look for alert, welcoming signs from your baby: she looks at you with wide eyes, other body movement stops while she focuses on you, she relaxes and maybe reaches out to you. Likewise, during your games, watch for signs that your child may be overstimulated, by turning away or refusing to meet your gaze, closing his or her eyes and becoming either fussy or quiet. Feel free to add your own touches to these tried and true games, and most of all, have fun!

I'm a Little Teapot

I'm a little teapot,
Short and stout
Here is my handle,
Here is my spout

When I get all steamed up
Hear me shout
Just tip me over
And pour me out.

Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes

Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes
Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes
Eyes and ears and mouth and nose
Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes

You Are My Sunshine

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skies are gray.
You'll never know dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

The other day dear, while I was sleeping,
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
You'll never know dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

Row, row, row your boat

Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.

Rock, rock, rock your boat
Gently side to side.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Let's go for a ride.

Mary had a little lamb

Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb.
Mary had a little lamb whose fleece was white as snow.
Everywhere that Mary went, Mary went, Mary went.
Everywhere that Mary went the lamb was sure to go.
